App Store Screenshot Generator: How to Generate Every Size From One Design

By FrameStudioOctober 22, 20269 min read

Short answer: an App Store screenshot generator turns raw captures of your app into finished store images (device frame, headline, background) and exports them at the exact pixel sizes App Store Connect accepts, for every language, in one go. In 2026 it must at least export the required 6.3-inch iPhone size (1206 × 2622 px) and, for iPad apps, the 13-inch iPad size (2064 × 2752 or 2048 × 2732 px). Pick one by how you work: a web generator, a design tool with templates, code (fastlane), or a Mac app such as FrameStudio.

This guide explains what a generator does, the four kinds available, what "free" usually means, and how to generate a full set step by step. Sizes come from Apple's screenshot specifications; the full list is in our App Store screenshot sizes guide.

What an App Store screenshot generator does

A screenshot of your app straight from the Simulator is a raw capture. A generator adds what makes it a store screenshot and handles the tedious part:

  • Layout: a headline or caption, a background, and your capture placed inside a device frame.
  • Sizes: the same design rendered at each slot's exact pixels (iPhone 6.9", 6.5", 6.3", 6.1", iPad 13", 11", Mac 16:10), portrait or landscape.
  • Languages: one set per language, with translated captions.
  • Export: PNG or JPEG files without transparency, named and grouped so they are easy to upload.

Apple's App Review Guidelines (2.3.3) say screenshots should show the app in use, not only title art, a login page or a splash screen, and that text and image overlays are allowed. A generator works with that rule: the headline sells, the capture inside the frame proves it.

How to generate App Store screenshots in 5 steps

  1. Capture your app in the Simulator at the sizes you will upload, for example on an iPhone 16 Pro Max (1320 × 2868 px) and an iPhone 16 Pro (1206 × 2622 px), one capture per key screen (5 to 10 screens).
  2. Pick a layout: a template with a frame, headline and background that fits your app's category.
  3. Write one headline per screenshot that states a benefit in a few words; the first three screenshots matter most.
  4. Add your languages: translate the headlines, and swap captures where the interface text changes.
  5. Export every size your app needs (at least the 6.3-inch iPhone set, plus 13-inch iPad for iPad apps), then upload them in App Store Connect, as shown in how to upload screenshots to App Store Connect.

App Store screenshot creator vs. design tool

A screenshot creator (or maker) is built for one job: its canvas already knows the App Store sizes and device frames, so changing a headline updates every size at once. A general design tool can produce the same images, but each size is a separate frame you resize and check yourself. The more languages and devices you ship, the more a dedicated generator saves.

Generating screenshots with code: fastlane

fastlane snapshot (free, open source) uses Xcode UI tests to capture your app on every simulator and in every language automatically, and frameit puts the captures into device frames with a background and localized titles. fastlane's own docs note that frames without titles keep the device's full resolution and so cannot be uploaded to the App Store directly; with titles and a background they can. Ideal if you already write UI tests; heavy if you just want five nice screenshots.

Free App Store screenshot generators: what free usually means

"Free" covers several deals, so read the export rules before you design anything:

  • Free and open source: fastlane is free; the cost is setup time and Xcode UI tests.
  • Free plan with limits: many web generators let you design for free and limit exports, sizes, languages or templates on the free plan.
  • Free download, paid export: FrameStudio is free to download from the Mac App Store and you can design in the editor for free; exporting, AI translation and the AI agent connection come with FrameStudio Premium, sold as a subscription or as a one-time lifetime purchase.
  • Free capture, manual design: Simulator screenshots cost nothing; the framing and resizing is then your time.

iPhone and iPad screenshot generator: the sizes it must export

SlotSize to export (portrait, px)Needed?
iPhone 6.3" (Dynamic Island, medium)1206 × 2622 or 1179 × 2556Required for iPhone apps
iPhone 6.9" (Dynamic Island, large)1320 × 2868, 1290 × 2796 or 1260 × 2736Recommended (else Apple wants 6.5")
iPhone 6.5" (Face ID, large)1284 × 2778 or 1242 × 2688Only if you skip 6.9"
iPad 13"2064 × 2752 or 2048 × 2732Required for iPad apps
Mac2880 × 1800 (or 2560 × 1600, 1440 × 900, 1280 × 800)Required for Mac apps

A generator that only exports the older 6.5-inch and 5.5-inch sizes is out of date: since Apple's current page requires the 6.3-inch set, check this before you pay for anything. Landscape apps need the same sizes with width and height swapped.

Generating localized App Store screenshots

App Store Connect takes a separate screenshot set for each language of your product page, up to 10 screenshots per size. A generator should keep one design and swap only the text per language, so ten languages do not mean ten designs. Check how it translates (by hand, or with AI translation you can edit) and whether it exports every language in one run with a folder per language and size.

AI App Store screenshot generators

"AI screenshot generator" covers two very different things:

  • Image AI that draws your screenshots. Fast, but it can invent interface that your app does not have, which goes against guideline 2.3.3 (show the app in use) and misleads buyers.
  • An AI agent that drives a real design tool. The agent works with your real captures and the tool's exact sizes; it only automates the clicks. FrameStudio has a built-in MCP server, so Claude Code, Codex or another MCP client can pick a template, place your captures in device frames, translate every language and export every size: see automating App Store screenshots with Claude Code.

Generate App Store screenshots with FrameStudio

FrameStudio is a native Mac app built to be an App Store screenshot generator:

  1. Download it free from the Mac App Store (macOS 14 or later) and sign in with Apple.
  2. Start from one of 60+ templates, such as the iPhone screenshot templates, or a blank project for iPhone, iPad or Mac.
  3. Drop your captures into the real device frames and edit headlines, fonts, colors and layers on the canvas.
  4. Add languages; AI translation rewrites every text layer while the design stays the same.
  5. Export: one click renders the iPhone 6.1", 6.3", 6.5", 6.7" and 6.9" sizes (or iPad 11" and 13", or the four Mac sizes) as PNG, one folder per size, for every language. Exporting needs FrameStudio Premium.

It also exports app preview videos at Apple's accepted resolutions. If you are comparing tools, our screenshot tools comparison covers the main alternatives.

Checklist before you pick a generator

  • Exports the required 6.3-inch iPhone size and, for iPad apps, the 13-inch iPad size.
  • Exports without an alpha channel (App Store Connect refuses transparency).
  • Device frames for the iPhones your users have, updated when Apple ships new ones.
  • One design for every size and language, not one per size.
  • Landscape support if your app or game is landscape.
  • A price model that fits how often you ship: a monthly plan, a one-time purchase, or free with your own time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an App Store screenshot generator?

A tool that turns raw captures of your app into finished App Store screenshots (device frame, headline, background) and exports them at the exact pixel sizes App Store Connect accepts, for every language, from one design.

Is there a free App Store screenshot generator?

Yes, with conditions. fastlane snapshot and frameit are free and open source but need Xcode UI tests. Many web generators have a free plan with limited exports. FrameStudio is a free download where you can design for free; exporting needs FrameStudio Premium (a subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase).

What size should generated App Store screenshots be?

At least the 6.3-inch iPhone size, 1206 × 2622 or 1179 × 2556 px in portrait, and for iPad apps the 13-inch size, 2064 × 2752 or 2048 × 2732 px. Adding the 6.9-inch size (1320 × 2868 px) covers the rest of Apple's iPhone slots.

Can AI generate App Store screenshots?

An image AI can draw screenshots, but it may invent interface your app does not have, and Apple's guideline 2.3.3 asks screenshots to show the app in use. A safer use of AI is an agent that drives a real screenshot tool with your real captures, such as Claude Code connected to FrameStudio over MCP.

Can I generate App Store screenshots without a Mac?

Web generators run in any browser, so yes. fastlane snapshot needs Xcode and FrameStudio is a Mac app, so both need a Mac.
